Tech Blogs in Decline: A Daily Roundup

It’s past 4 am here and I can’t sleep. So I decided to take a look at how much the TBRI (Tech Blog Relevance Index) fell yesterday. For those who didn’t believe me when I said tech blogs are increasingly irrelevant, I present you with these gems.

TechCrunch: I’ve Seen The Future Of Mashups, And Its Name Is PizzaShare

Robin Wauters is Web 2.0’s version of the guy who writes the local paper’s police log. And boy did he find an arresting story: “Thanks to PizzaShare, you’ll hopefully never have to wonder where to get them slices because you can just enter the city or zip code and go for the one that has the biggest circle.”

Mashable: Social Media Break: 5 Cute Animal Sites to Make You Go Aww

“Having a rough day? If the Facebook apps, web shows, and iPhone apps we’ve already shared aren’t doing the trick, then it’s time to bring out the big guns — cute animal photos and videos,” writes Mashable’s Jennifer Van Grove.

I don’t know, Jennifer. I suspect that well-armed Mashable readers might be thinking about another kind of big gun after reading a few dozen Mashable posts about Facebook apps, web shows and iPhone apps in a single day. Of course, I imagine that most of them have already considered turning those big gun on themselves. I know I would if I was forced to read filler content all day.

ReadWriteWeb: Howard Lindzon and Friends Launch New Investment Fund for Social Apps

What do you do when you’ve mastered the art of losing money in the stock market? Start a fund for social apps. It’s the next logical step on the road to “social services.”

Web Strategy by Jeremiah: Expulsion of the Social Media “Gurus” –Impacts of the Recession

Definition of the word “irony”: when social media hypester Jeremiah Owyang writes “one of the challenges of the social media industry, oh, and in case you haven’t noticed, there are a lot of challenges, is that self-proclaimed gurus have appeared from everywhere.”

GigaOm: Zombies Attack Time Warner Cable in SoCal

“If you’re an irritated Time Warner Cable customer in Los Angeles who has been experiencing crappy service for the last week, you can blame the zombies,” writes GigaOm’s Stacey Higginbotham.

It’s timely news for the tens of millions of SoCal GigaOm readers but unfortunately Higginbotham is confused. Those aren’t real zombies – they’re extras in the upcoming film TechCrunch Millionaire, which is based on the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. It chronicles every one of Michael Arrington’s posts on TechCrunch and how he was capable of writing them. Running time: 2 years, 4 days, 11 hours. Hence the zombies who, incidentally, kind of resemble Mikey himself.

VentureBeat: Google says hello to Twitter with a stream of 1s and 0s

And VentureBeat beats them all with the biggest news of the day: Google is now on Twitter. What more needs to be said?

Conclusion

The tech blogosphere is boring enough to put even this insomniac to sleep. I’ll throw in a glass of Cognac for good measure. After all, reading this shit is as good an excuse to drink past 2 am as I’ve ever found.

Here’s what I do when I have insomnia: I start a new blog. You might appreciate this one, it’s all about the rise and fall of my tech startup company, and it’s called The Startup Wife. That’d be me.

Obviously you’re posting some extremely horrible examples but I agree in general. There’s just not that much interesting stuff to post about every single day, but people expect at least 10 new stories day on any “news” blog. So they have to post any fucking thing that comes their way. Definitely lame as hell but I can sort of understand why they do it. Not that I’m defending it or anything.

I like sites like CenterNetworks that only have a few stories a day, but generally ones that are actually interesting and worthwhile.
